A Series on Community Bail Funds: Post 4 of 6

Recognizing the ways that cash bail skews criminal justice outcomes and the attendant consequences that radiate from the individual to the community, activists in jurisdictions most impacted by mass incarceration have begun creating community bail funds. 

"Freedom funds," which currently operate in places including the BronxBrooklyn, and Chicago, are pots of community money that are used to pay for the release of those who would otherwise be incarcerated pending their trials. When someone who has been released using a community fund resolves her criminal case, the money is returned to the fund and becomes available for someone else.
