Member
of British Parliament visits Ohio Death Row
Inmate
(Columbus)-British MP Alistair Carmichael and
Amnesty International UK Executive Director Kate Allen today
visited Ohio Death Row inmate Kenny Richey at the Mansfield
Correctional Institution.
Richey, born in Holland to an American
serviceman father and a Scottish mother, was convicted of
aggravated murder and aggravated arson, and sentenced to death in
Putnam County in 1987.
The facts of Richey’s case remain in dispute,
with witnesses who have recanted their testimony and experts who
have challenged the evidence used against him. Additionally,
Richey’s trial lawyer admits that his handling of the case was
inadequate.
Richey’s case has garnered international
attention, with Pope John Paul II, former Archbishop of Canterbury
George Carey, actors Susan Sarandon and Robbie Coltrane, and
others supporting his efforts to get a retrial. Earlier this
month, British Prime Minister Tony Blair promised to intervene.
Amnesty International has called Richey’s case
“one of the most compelling cases of innocence human rights
campaigners have ever seen.”
