About the Trial Department

Since its inception, OPD has represented indigent trial clients throughout Ohio, usually in serious felonies and capital cases. In 1998, the Office created the Trial Department to focus its work for trial clients. The Trial Department works in a wide variety of legal areas and with a wide array of clients. The three lawyers currently assigned to the Trial Department are all qualified to serve as lead counsel for indigent capital defendants. In addition, our trial lawyers regularly consult with outside counsel on trial matters, help keep the Death Penalty Motions Manual up to date, assist office colleagues with evidentiary hearings in state post-conviction and federal habeas corpus cases, and present at various death-penalty trial seminars.
