Pretrial detention results in negative consequences that are unrelated to a person's guilt or innocence. 

This May 2016 article by Megan Stevenson is the first to use a quasi-experimental research design to show that the money bail actually causes guilty pleas, higher court costs, and longer sentences. Specifically, pretrial detention
  • “leads to a 13% increase in the likelihood of being convicted,”
  • “$128 more in court fees,” and
  • “incarceration sentences that are almost five months longer.”
